The categories, use of reason and discretion of judgment, enter the lan­guage of Canon Law by way of metaphysical psychology. The classical texts, to which canonists refer when employing these categories, belong to Saint Thomas Aquinas and Thomas Sanchez. For Saint Thomas Aquinas, use of reason and discretion of judgment are synonymous.
