The Answer to Divorce
Fr. Zachary of the Mother of God, a priest in the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, teaches how to heal from divorce. The answer is not getting remarried, living as if one is not married, nor acting as if one is single again. He grew up in a divorced home and his Mom remained faithful to his Dad.
Excerpt from EWTN May 25, 2019 homily HERE
We need to start with the teaching of our King, never separating love from truth.
I understand the difficulty of family life and marriage.
In my own family, my parents were divorced.
. . . It is the Truth that will set people free.
Let’s not close in on ourselves.
Let’s open our ourselves up to love and truth
(and I love you Mom, I know you are watching this, supporting me, and all those who suffered divorce).
The answer is not getting remarried.
Once you are married, you are married.
You stay faithful, even if you are not living in the same house because there might be abuse.
You still live that marriage.
You desire the highest and best good for the other, praying for them to get to heaven.
And you get healed that way.
That is the wisdom of God.
Let’s not start acting like if we just start passing new laws everything will be OK.
Just because something is legal that does not mean that it is right.
Catholics who have been divorced need more priests to teach like Fr. Zachary. He made these statement in his homily during daily Mass on May 25, 2019, broadcast by EWTN.
Other voices in some dioceses say the opposite. For example, the DVD series “Catholic’s Divorce Survival Guide” teaches divorced listeners that they are single and encourages listeners to discern whether to date and have a romantic relationship with a new partner. Listeners are cautioned not to make the children the center of their life, because that is idolatry (watch excerpt here).
Mary’s Advocates support those who are unjustly abandoned and remain faithful to marriage, who follow the direction of Fr. Zachary. We have monthly telephone conference calls using the book “The Gift of Self, A Spiritual Companion for Separated and Divorced Faithful to the Sacrament of Marriage.”
