I said marriage is reduced to an irrational liability.
Beverly Willett and I gave public comments to the Texas Commission on Marriage and Family. One item on their agenda was to consider a comprehensive review and modernization of the Texas family court system. The Commission is tasked with reporting back to the Texas legislature, and Beverly and I asked them to recommend the abolition of unilateral no-fault divorce. I said marriage is reduced to an irrational liability (see my prepared statements).

The Texas Commission on Marriage and Family (TCMF) was established in June of 2025 by Texas HB 3284, which begins with these findings:
FINDINGS. The legislature finds that:
- it is in the best interests of this state to promote lasting marriage and the practice of raising children in stable, two-parent households;
- Texas must promote evidence-based pathways to support strong and healthy family connections by reducing barriers that prevent Texans from marrying and raising children;
- certain state laws, rules, and policies may discourage the positive and desirable ends of marriage and family formation; and
- it is necessary to convene a commission to:
-
- (A) study and develop strategies to promote strong marriages and healthy families; and
- (B) identify state laws, rules, and policies that discourage Texans from marrying and raising children.
Catholics officially weighed in. I found the Executive Director of the Texas Catholic Conference of Bishops registered in favor of the bill (See 21 May 2025 TX Senate Committee Report Witness List).
If you hope that this discussion happens in your state too, contact your state’s State Family Policy Council and learn which legislators support biblical family policies. Show them Texas HB 3284 and ask what it would take for them to establish a Commission on Marriage and Family in your state modeled on Texas HB 3284. Then contact your state’s bishops’ conference and ask what it would take for them to support the bill to establish this kind of commission in your state.
These commissions have no power to repeal unilateral no-fault divorce laws, but they can report the perspectives of the souls affected by no-fault divorce. I believe the divorce lawyers strongly lobby to keep unilateral no-fault divorce because it is easy money for them and there is no competing lobby for keeping marriages together.
