Blessed Elizabeth Canori Mora is a model of holiness lived even after happily-ever-after goes sour
“In the eyes of the world, then as now, Elizabeth was a deluded, battered woman.” This Aletia article shows how an abandoned and abused wife remained faithful to her marriage and prayed, loving her husband, hoping for his conversion. In our upside down world, with unilateral no-fault divorce, it is inspiring to read about a real, true, strong, holy wife.
Thank you Meg Hunger-Kilmer for sharing her story!
Meg describes the aristocratic woman from the late 18th century whose husband grew disinterested, gambled, drank, and had mistresses. The surprise ending is that the husband was out with a mistress the night Elizabeth died; his heart softened, and he was overcome by grief and remorse and repented.
Friends of Mary’s Advocates who choose to remain faithful to a spouse who has abandoned or committed grave offenses justifying separation, support each other with our monthly conference calls and use the book “The Gift of Self, A Spiritual Companion for Separated and Divorced Faithful to the Sacrament of Marriage.
